Emilie
RVT
We’re thrilled to have Emilie as part of our Cumberland County Animal Hospital team! A 2014 graduate of the Veterinary Technician Program at Oulton College, Emilie brings her skills, compassion, and love for animals to every patient she cares for. Originally from Chilliwack, BC, Emilie moved to the east coast in 2012 and now calls Cumberland County home, where she lives with her husband, two sons, and a house full of furry companions. Her pets include Howard, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and four cherished cats—Luna, Stasha, Moo, and Maggie. Despite being allergic to cats, Emilie never lets that stop her from giving them all the cuddles they deserve! When she’s not at the hospital, Emilie enjoys relaxing at home with her pets, spending quality time with her boys, and indulging in her favorite food—sushi. Emilie is excited to meet you and your pets and is committed to providing exceptional care for every furry family member!
Questions
-
What’s your favorite animal and why?
My favorite animal is the ring-tailed lemur—they’re so cute that just seeing one makes me happy! Their scientific name, Lemur catta, is equally fascinating. Lemur means “ghost” in Latin, a nod to their mysterious and curious nature, while catta refers to their cat-like appearance. Coincidentally, cats are my second favorite animal, so it feels like the perfect match!

What’s your pet’s name and why did you choose it?
I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Howard. Technically, we didn’t choose his name, but it suited him so perfectly that we decided to keep it. He and his littermates were all named after characters from the classic show Happy Days, which makes his name feel even more special!
-
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is our hospital’s kitten adoption program. By spaying mother cats and ensuring all kittens are spayed or neutered before adoption, we’re directly contributing to population control and responsible pet ownership. Every cat we help reduces the number of kittens entering an already overwhelmed shelter system, preventing more cats from ending up on the streets or in shelters. Plus, we get to find these kittens loving homes—and sneak in plenty of snuggles before they leave!

What inspired you to work in this industry?
The balance between scientific knowledge and compassion is what drives me in this field. Veterinary medicine allows me to alleviate pain, prevent disease, and help animals recover, channeling my love for animals into meaningful, life-changing work. Being an advocate for pets who rely on us every day is both an honor and a privilege.

What advancements in veterinary medicine are you most excited about?
I’m especially excited about the expanding role of veterinary technicians in the field. As medical technology advances and animal care becomes more complex, veterinary technicians are taking on larger roles in diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. This transformation allows for greater collaboration with veterinarians, deeper involvement in animal care, and the opportunity to make an even bigger impact. I’m proud to be part of this evolution and to see the incredible contributions veterinary technicians can make to the health and well-being of animals.
