Rachael
RVT
Rachael has had a deep love for animals for as long as she can remember. Her journey in animal care began shortly after graduating high school, when she took a job at an animal shelter in Dartmouth, N.S.—an experience that confirmed her desire to build a career dedicated to helping animals. She holds a Business Management diploma with a specialization in Companion Animal Care from Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture (2014), as well as a Veterinary Technology diploma from Oulton College (2018).
Originally from Ingonish, Cape Breton Island, Rachael brings a unique background that includes helping launch a goat’s milk soap shop in her hometown—an adventure that left her with no shortage of entertaining goat stories! Today, she lives in the Moncton area with her dog, Otis, and two cats, Hazel and Brogan.
In her free time, Rachael enjoys trips to Cape Breton to see family, spending time with close friends, going on road trips, attending concerts and country music festivals, relaxing at the beach in the sun, and getting lost in a good thriller novel. A standout moment in her career was traveling to Costa Rica and Aruba, where she helped spay and neuter nearly 1,000 animals in need. She’s excited to meet you and provide exceptional care for your pets!
Questions
-
What is your favorite animal and why?
Cats, without a doubt! I love how unique each one is, from their personalities to their quirks. They’re endlessly entertaining, and their antics always give me that feeling of “cute aggression” (if you know, you know!).
-
If you could communicate with animals, what’s the first thing you’d ask them?
“Why would you do that?” “Why would you eat that?” “What were you thinking?” I don’t think I could stop at just one question!
-
What’s the most unusual pet you’ve ever cared for?
While not pets, I once helped take radiographs on a serval cat that ate a ball and cared for squirrel monkeys after neuter surgeries. These amazing animals were from Magnetic Hill Zoo, and I had the chance to work with them at a previous job before joining CCAH.
-
What inspired you to work in this industry?
I’ve loved animals since childhood, but my first job at Homeward Bound City Pound in Dartmouth confirmed it. Helping animals heal and thrive was incredibly rewarding, and my interest in medical care and science naturally led me to a career as a veterinary technician—combining all my passions into one fulfilling path.

What advice would you give to pet owners to ensure their pets lead healthy lives?
Annual blood work for adult pets and twice-yearly for seniors is key to catching organ changes early. Also, monitor your pet’s weight regularly, as fluctuations—especially in cats—can signal underlying health issues. Proactive care goes a long way in keeping pets happy and healthy!
