Emergencies do not keep a schedule. A pet who seemed fine at breakfast can be limping, in pain or struggling to breathe by lunch. When that happens, you need a team that can act quickly. At Cumberland County Animal Hospital in Amherst, Nova Scotia, we provide urgent care for dogs and cats during our regular hours, Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:00pm.
This guide explains when to call us, what happens when you arrive, and where to go for after-hours pet emergencies, so you can be ready before you ever need it.
Signs your pet may need urgent care
Our clinic is equipped to handle a variety of urgent conditions. Call us or come in right away if your pet has:
- An injury, such as a wound, a fall or another traumatic accident
- A sudden illness that comes on quickly
- Trouble breathing
- Signs of pain
- Eaten something that may be toxic, such as chocolate, sugar-free candy that contains xylitol, or holiday plants and decorations
If your pet ate chocolate, have this information ready when you call: your pet's weight, the type of chocolate, about how much was eaten and how long ago. Bring any wrappers or packaging with you. Our Halloween hazards and holiday safety posts cover more seasonal risks.
Not sure if it is urgent? Call us at (902) 612-2520. We would always rather hear from you early.
What happens when you arrive
Fast assessment and evaluation
When your pet arrives, our experienced team does a quick and thorough evaluation to judge how serious the problem is. We prioritize care based on symptoms, vital signs and injuries, so the pets who need help most are seen first.
Diagnostics on site
Finding the cause quickly matters in an emergency. Our hospital has digital x-rays and an in-house laboratory, so we can run tests and look at images without sending them away. You can read more about how this works in our post on in-house lab testing and digital x-rays.
Treatment and stabilization
Once we have a diagnosis, our veterinarians start treatment right away. Depending on what your pet needs, that may include pain management, medication, surgery or other care. Our main focus is to relieve pain and stabilize your pet.
Monitoring and support
During an urgent care visit, we monitor your pet continuously and adjust treatment as needed. We know how stressful emergencies are for families, and we will keep you informed and supported throughout.
Aftercare and recovery
Before your pet goes home, we give you detailed aftercare instructions. We may book a follow-up appointment to make sure recovery is on track. Many of our clients also tell us they appreciate the follow-up call after an appointment.
When your pet needs specialized care
Some cases need equipment or training beyond a general practice. If your pet needs more specialized treatment, we will refer you to an emergency or specialty facility, or to a board-certified veterinary specialist, so your pet gets the best possible care.
